As a college athlete, I was a part of the eighty-five percent of players that didn’t get into trouble and didn’t have major issues with grades. However, it took me until my senior year to figure out what I was going to do after graduation. Prior to making this decision, I believed I was going to play football professionally, so I didn’t seek out other professional development opportunities and not many were afforded to me. Thankfully, I was able to find an opportunity that allowed me to transition into the next phase of my life after graduation. Sadly, there were many young men that weren’t as blessed - I see this as a problem.

My name is Irvin A. Magaña. I grew up in Echo Park, CA. Going to school wasn’t the best thing for me. In fact, I despised going. I was disruptive, bad mouth, didn’t care about my grades or anything. Unfortunately, this caused my teachers to react a certain way with me. The same way I treated them, they treated me. Without a care for my education, I was known as the “disruptive one” in all my classes. Teachers highlighted this and intentionally placed me as the center of what NOT to be. I used this as an excuse to not attend class and do my own thing. Little did I know, this was going to haunt me and ruin my educational career. I placed a lot of the blame on my teachers for not knowing how to deal with me and my behaviors. It was hard for me to see that the teachers I had, actually wanted to help me. None of them took the time to check in with me, none of them took the time to reach out and see if everything was ok at home. All but one teacher. After disrespecting him, he made me stay after class, in what I though was going to be a long lecture. Instead, he asked me what high school I was planning on attending. He also mentioned that if I played football, to let him know because he wanted to go see my games. Shocked?! Yes! I was. But we spoke and had a long conversation. Years later, I realized that it only takes a small amount of effort to try and engage with a child. I spent the last 10 years in a school setting either; coaching, training or leading a group of kids. My mission became clear. I wanted to work with Educators and help them find a greater purpose in what they do and who they serve by focusing on their development of influence. If I am able to help Educators go deeper than just teaching, I would be able to reach more students. I am a Motivational Speaker, Leadership Coach and Trainer. I want to give students another opportunity for success by motivating and training their Educators in schools, nonprofits and any other before or after school program setting. I have gained 4 core values in which I live by; 1) Faith 2) Family 3) Integrity 4) Development (myself and others) Recent presentations include Engaging Children and Building Connections.

In 2007, with a twenty-thousand dollar inheritance from my grandmother, I started a line of girls clothing called TwirlyGirl. At the time, I was a successful television actor, having appeared numerous times on Friends, Seinfeld, ER, Will & Grace, Just Shoot Me, Suddenly Susan and countless other shows. But I was burned out on Hollywood, and wanted to do something more meaningful with my life. My intention was to create a business that would give children something I never had: a happy childhood memory. Because I was abused for six years, my childhood was taken from me. Thirteen years later, TwirlyGirl is a multi-million dollar business and is sold all over the world. In 2019, Cathy Heller of Don’t Keep Your Day Job discovered TwirlyGirl and became a customer. After learning about my story, she invited me to speak first on her podcast then at her Dreamtopia event in Los Angeles. Since then, I’ve also spoken at Women of Strength in Arizona and have been asked back again for their March, 2020 event in Washington. I’m also scheduled to speak at Lead and Empower Her conference in San Diego, also in March 2020. Over the years, I’ve been a guest on at least 50 different podcasts, and I also give a weekly Facebook Live discussion to our 80,000 fans. Past topics include: changing paths, overcoming trauma, using the past to heal the present, and developing a unique brand. I aim to be both inspirational and practical, offering concrete steps for people to take in order to make their own lives feel fulfilling. I also speak about overcoming trauma. I am a survivor of childhood sexual abuse, and I started sharing my story on my company website in 2010. I took a giant risk in doing that, worrying that it might adversely affect my business. But I now realize that authentically sharing my story is a gift. I believe many diverse audiences will enjoy learning from my story.
