Growing up for anyone is a difficult adjustment from babyhood to childhood to teenagehood(Rough waters anyone?!) to adulthood. This is particularly noticeable in Joe J Rivera Alcaraz Cervantes. Being born of immigrants, with societal pressures to conform to the American way of life as well and torn to be either too much Americano or not enough, never quite balanced, makes any childhood rough. Add that to the loopy craziness that are in all family structures and your own personal failings? Joe grew up cracked, broken, not feeling good enough. Because of this bundle of exquisite internal strife training, he had learned to elegantly and with sophistication completely mask, hide, keep secret and camouflage these cracked and broken feelings of negative self doubt and self worth! He has lived through panic attacks, as well as depression, and anxiety throughout his life and become stronger thanks to these challenges. His wonderful wife of 25 years has been his inspiration as well as being an extraordinary survivor of his quirkiness as well! My twin sister and I were born 14 weeks premature in the 70’s, a time when such tiny babies were not deemed viable. We were so small that my father could hold each of us on the palm of his hand. We were given too much oxygen at birth, which caused irreparable damage to my eyes, causing total blindness. Tragically, my sister did not survive. I was in the first group of blind students to be fully integrated into my local schools, at a time when blind children were usually sent interstate to attend special schools. I went on to study commerce and law at the Australian National University and graduated with honours in Law, wich lead to a 17 year legal career. In my spare time I have studied overseas, climbed to a height over 10000 feet in Nepal, and overcome a number of challenges including independent bus travel.
